CHAPTER 7

Sky

I’ve been doing job applications for the foster care department, hospitals, and schools in each surrounding county. Becoming a clinical social worker was my overall goal. My story wasn’t like my sisters’. I was left at the hospital at birth, I never met my parents. I’ve been in the foster care system all my life. Nobody claimed me because I was too dark. Ms. Wendy was the last stop for me at the age of fourteen. Had the girls not been placed there, I would’ve moved with Sandy for my last three years of foster care. Once Autumn got there, I realized that I wanted a sister who understood my struggles so, I stayed.

Staying up on my state exam studies allowed me a better chance of changing the system. I hate that there was potentially someone else going through the same thing as us. The only way to infiltrate the system was from the inside. Sandy was also willing to guide me through the process.

“Sis, what you over there daydreaming about?” Lyric asked walking into the living room.

“My life after school and the career I want.”

“Yeah, we had a plan and stuck to it. Now that graduation is Friday, I think I’m ready for some fun. Therapy has been helping, I still want to kill them. You think we’ll ever be happily married, in our careers, and with more kids?” Lyric questioned.

“I knew we should’ve had a lil’ fun these past years. We not even that old and we haven’t done anything that girls our age do. I just didn’t want us to lose focus. You see how losing focus had Autumn. Being free and safe was our goal and we’ve accomplished that. The right men will come along, and we’ll love them and vice versa. Just wait and see,” I explained.

“Well, what we doing for our graduation celebration?” Autumn asked.

“Fucking shit up! We about to act our age for once. Plus, you quitting the club. We have so much to celebrate.” Lyric beamed getting up twerking.

I love these moments. We had to grow up early and this right here was everything. It’s been a while since I’ve spent time with my sisters, there was nothing but smiles and laughter throughout this moment. We chilled the rest of the day. Ari woke up and we watched movies until we all knocked out.

“Ms. Fuller, can you stay a minute after class?” My case management professor Ms. Howard asked.

I waited for everyone to leave, then I headed to her desk. I was curious why she asked me to stay behind. I was passing this class with a A minus.

“Ms. Fuller, I just want to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed you being in my class. Reading your papers and seeing your growth from the first day of class till now. You’re going to be a great social worker. If you ever need a letter of recommendation or any type of help to move forward in your career, don’t hesitate to reach out.
